I’m blessed to have Rosi in my life. Rosi is my friend’s 14-year-old English cream retriever. Rosi was born in Germany and the first dog I pet sat after Cody Bear, my retriever died. This year, Rosi’s mom moved into my apartment complex. Since then, Rosi has set up a routine that she likes to have respected.
Because of her age, her walks have grown shorter. Her chosen route these days involves making a pit stop at my house, receiving treats, drinking water, and laying down for a nap before going home. My home is the halfway point. Her mom and I laugh because Rosi is adamant in walking to my back door. If I am not home, she insists on going to my front door and trying that one. When she is walked in the opposite direction, she'll circle back and walk toward my back door.
This morning, I stopped by to get her after I dropped Bella off at doggy daycare. Her mom and I laughed because Rosi had not been able stop by all weekend. Seeing how fast she moves when she wants something is a wonder and makes the little girl in me laugh. This morning, she took off jogging towards my house, took care of her bathroom needs, jogged until she got to my back door, waited as I opened it and let her in, got her treats, drank water, did a lap around my apartment to see if that deserved more treats, and is currently snoozing in the kitchen at my feet.
Can you teach an old dog new tricks? In Rosi’s case, I choose not to. In my mind, at her age, she has earned the right to her routines.
What if instead of beating ourselves up when we were trying to learn something new, we took a moment and:
Nurtured and loved ourselves for exactly how we were showing up in that moment?
Laughed and smiled, knowing how quickly we could move if we really wanted something?
And took a moment to ask ourselves, “What would make me race towards this new thing?” and focused on that?
Thank you Rosi for being such a great teacher!
